Standard Vitreous Enamel Spray/ Sheet Steel and Cast Iron Colours

Vitreous Enamel (VE) is glass fused with a steel or cast iron substrate, at temperatures in excess of 800ºC. This gives a hardwearing, graffiti resistant, low maintenance product with excellent temperature, chemical and UV resistance.

VE is coloured in one of two ways:

SCREEN-PRINT: Block colours are hand-applied through a screen mesh before firing. This is a skilled, labour-intensive process, but AJ Wells’ experienced printers are able to achieve a full range of colours and produce wonderfully vibrant designs for maps, signs and interpretation panels. Depending on project complexity, there is usually no charge for producing a screen-print colour match. Colour samples can be supplied for approval when required.

SPRAY: Colour can be mixed with the base coat of enamel and sprayed on to the metal substrate. This gives a uniform colour with the same hardwearing VE finish, but there are limitations on the colours which can be produced due to health and safety concerns with spraying some ingredients. AJ Wells have a range of standard colours for sheet steel and for cast iron – as indicated below. We can also colour match to your specific needs (subject to the limitations mentioned), although there is a small charge for this. Please contact us for details.

PLEASE NOTE: The CIE L*a*b* give an accurate colour measurement. RAL and Pantone colour references are supplied for guidance purposes only as it is difficult to accurately compare VE colours with traditional pantone reference chips. This is our best interpretation and is intended as a helpful guide only.

A J Wells can supply vitreous enamel colour samples on request.

The extreme temperatures required for the processing of VE create an inherent colour variability and also limit the range of spray colours available, particularly in the red area of the colour spectrum. However, A. J Wells has 20 years experience in providing colour matches and will endeavour to match most colours on request.

This colour guide applies to our sheet metal and cast iron spray colours only. A.J Wells employ expert printers who are able to match and apply a far wider range of screen printed colours.
