As principal contractor, A.J Wells managed and installed the memorial at Farringdon Station commemorating Edward Johnston the creator of the London Underground typeface. The work comprises enlarged Johnston font hardwood print block lettering from Z to A, with each letter measuring approximately 470mm in height. Each letter is a close representation of the original Johnston print block letters and was designed by Fraser Muggeridge.

The installation also serves as a celebration of the famous font that is now synonymous with the London Underground. The precision and purity of the typeface is made even more evident by the sculpture, which goes some way to explaining why it became so iconic and utilised throughout the London Transport network.

A.J Wells was contracted by the London Underground to work with designer Fraser Muggeridge and manufacturer Thomas Mayo to install the Edward Johnston Memorial at Farringdon station. Due to the high profile opening of the memorial, it was decided that the project manager would attend the site throughout the installation process to ensure timely delivery. We were able to reduce labour costs for these works by agreeing extended engineering hours with the station staff before our site visit.

The items were delivered to us by the manufacturer and our installation teams were briefed and equipped with additional packaging to ensure the materials were kept safe during installation and transportation.

A.J Wells were also responsible for the technical submission of documents to the London Underground Project team. This included detailed setting out information, materials register and fixing information.
